Made with the page turned horizontally, this drawing was used, probably with others in the group of Windermere views here, for example folios 69 recto and 71 recto (D01056, D01058; Turner Bequest XXXV 54, 56), as the basis for a much altered watercolour view of Windermere for the Picturesque Views in England and Wales, of about 1835 (Manchester Art Gallery),1 engraved in 1837 (Tate impression: T05102). This depicts pleasure craft and holidaymakers as well as local people on the shore at the boat landing at Bowness, with Belle Isle in the distance, and Fairfield in golden haze beyond. Views drawn at the upper end of the lake, folios 67 recto and 68 recto (D01054, D01055; Turner Bequest XXXV 52, 53), show Fairfield from somewhat closer.
