Folio 78 Recto:
Morecambe Bay: A Lime Kiln under Cliffs 1797
D01065
Turner Bequest XXXV 63
Pencil on white wove paper, 274 x 370 mm
Blind-stamped with Turner Bequest monogram towards bottom right
Stamped in black ‘XXXV 63’ bottom left, descending vertically
Drawn with the page turned horizontally, this subject is reminiscent of scenes observed by Turner on his tour of South Wales in 1795, for example Tate D00566 (Turner Bequest XXVI 14) in the South Wales sketchbook, and anticipates drawings he was to make in other parts of Wales during his tour of 1798. He produced a small oil painting known as Limekiln at Coalbrookdale in this year, 1797, or possibly 1798 (Yale Center for British Art, New Haven).1
