With the sketchbook orientated horizontally, Turner has produced a basic linear sketch of the valley surrounding the castle of Franchimont from the Liège-Spa road. The drawing formed the basis of a gouache, pen and ink, and watercolour drawing on blue paper executed at around the same date (Tate D24732; Turner Bequest CCLIX 167).
Part of the sketch from the previous folio (Tate D28103; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 32a), which has continued onto the present sheet, can be seen at the centre of the upper register.
