Turner took this view from Jambes, a district of Namur on the right bank of the Meuse. The sketch incorporates the citadel on the left bank and the ancient arched bridge, the Pont de Jambes, with rowing boats parked at the riverbanks. In the upper right corner of the page, the Pont de Jambes is depicted again and, then, once more on the following folio (Tate D28121; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 42). Similar views can be found in the earlier Huy and Dinant sketchbook of 1824 (Tate D20104–D20106; Turner Bequest CCXVII 12a–14 and the 1833 Brussels up to Mannheim-Rhine sketchbook (Tate D29645, D29647, D29751; Turner Bequest CCXCVI 25, 26, 79a).
