The rough sketch on the upper register depicts Huy from a south-easterly axis, the profile of the citadel visible atop the cliff and the tower of Notre-Dame Collegiate Church at the foot of the precipice. Below is a very basic rendering of Dinant and its celebrated monolith, the Roche à Bayard.
The remaining sketch of Notre-Dame is inverted in relation to the other drawings; it is thought to have formed the basis of a gouache, pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the church on blue paper (Tate D20268; Turner Bequest CCXXII I). Depicting the apse and towers of Notre-Dame, the pencil sketch was ‘drawn from the Place St-Denis, on the way up to La Sarte, a high viewpoint to the south-east of Huy’, according to Turner scholar Cecilia Powell.1
