This is one half of a detailed drawing of the citadel and Church of Notre-Dame at Dinant which continues onto the folio opposite (Tate D28156; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 61). The view is taken at street level, offering a striking contrast of architectural scale and style. Turner’s handling is deliberate and fine: a careful rendering of a picturesque and impressive scene.
