At the uppermost register Turner has produced a swift jotting of Dinant from the castle of Crèvecoeur. Dinant’s citadel can be seen atop the cliff range, shaded with light hatching. Below, and orientated inversely to the drawing above it, is a sketch of Crèvecoeur castle, followed by the spired church at Bouvignes and the Meuse valley with its grassy islets. The final sketch, also produced with the sketchbook turned upside down, is of Dinant, rendered in blunt pencil in fluid line. The lofty masts of two sailing-boats dominate the view; beyond them the Roche à Bayard, Dinant’s monolith, can be seen on the right bank. Turner has annotated the bottom of the drawing with the inscription ‘Din[ant] from the rock of Bayard’.
