The small sketch at the upper register depicts part of the quayside at Dinant where the Porte Saint-Martin stands before the bridge and church. The façade of Notre-Dame can be made out behind the parade of small houses and buildings which line the bank. Its spire is continued on the opposite folio (Tate D28165; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVII 66). The Porte Saint-Martin shares some of the bulbous, onion-shaped style of the church’s spire, but on a much-reduced scale.
Just below and to the right of the small sketch is a detail of the spire Notre-Dame and its multi-faceted lantern. The principal drawing at centre shows all three of Dinant’s sights taken from the riverbank before boatmen loading and unloading cargo from their vessels.
