J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

Here Turner pictures Trier in swift and summary line, incorporating the majority of its ecclesiastical buildings and sites of historical interest. The Moselle is in the immediate foreground, with a parade of buildings at the bankside including the Abbey of St Martin. From left to right: the baroque Church of St Paulin; the Porta Nigra; the Romanesque cathedral of St Peter and the adjacent thirteenth-century Liebfrauenkirche; and finally the fifteenth-century Church of St Gangolf. This sketch, along with Tate D28258, D28260; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 51, 52, formed the basis of a gouache and watercolour drawing on blue paper of c.1839 (Tate D24715; Turner Bequest CCLIX 150). At top right is a small and cursory sketch of what appears to be sloping hills.
