This pencil sketch of Luxembourg City is believed to be preparatory material for the gouache, pen and ink and watercolour drawing of the same subject on blue paper (Musée de l’État, Luxembourg).1 Turner’s viewpoint, the Fetschenhof, affords a more comprehensive prospect and includes the Rham with the French military engineer Vauban’s fortifications on the left, the Grünewald and the Bock.
