Rendered with rough and gestural handling in blunt pencil, these landscape sketches are likely to depict locations on the Moselle or Rhine Rivers. The inverted drawing of a spired church has an inscription next to it which Cecilia Powell suggests could read ‘Brilil’, an approximation of ‘Briedel’.1 There is a spired church depicted very basically in profile on the following folio (Tate D28382; Turner Bequest CCXC 16 a) and next to which Turner has inscribed ‘Bridel’. This may be the same church represented on the present folio.
