This rough and swiftly rendered sketch shows the crumbling ruins of the keep and curtain wall of the Burg Sonnenburg, the ancient seat of the Counts of Nassau. Turner has clearly ascended the mount atop which the citadel lays to record it from a closer perspective. Sonnenburg is also depicted on Tate D28478, D28479, D28481, D28482; Turner Bequest CCXC 64a, 65, 66, 66a.
