Here Turner has taken a view looking downstream on the Rhine, incorporating Castle Schönburg atop the cliff at left and part of the town of Kaub in the foreground. Kaub is known for its Castles Pfalz (or Burg Pfalzgrafenstein) and Gutenfels (see Tate D28499; Turner Bequest CCXC 75) but in this sketch Turner pictures the town’s evangelical rectory (Evangelisches Pfarramt).
