Here Turner has made a swift record of some of the river barges which sailed up and down the Rhine on a daily basis. Bargemen are shown rowing two of the boats, with one hauling two smaller craft behind him. On the folio opposite (Tate D28611; Turner Bequest CCXCI 38a) Turner has made a study of a Rhenish passenger boat.
