With the page turned vertically, there are three similar wooded waterside scenes here, lacking obvious landmarks but probably drawn on the rural River Thames west of London; there are identified scenes around Richmond at the other end of the sketchbook; see the Introduction. Folio 40 recto opposite (D17903) may also show such a subject.
Technical notes:
There is an adventitious strip of watercolour along the left-hand edge which presumably bled from the full page design on the recto (D17901).
