Joseph Mallord William Turner A Street, ?Northern France c.1832

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
A Street, ?Northern France c.1832
D40115
Pencil on blue paper, 190 x 135 mm
Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
This drawing was not recorded by Finberg in his Turner Bequest Inventory. Turner worked a pencil drawing onto this sheet of blue paper to depict the recession in perspective of a street of irregular buildings. The sketch is too cursory to identify the subject with certainty, although the verso of the sheet depicts the village of Petit Andelys, Normandy perhaps indicating a nearby location for this scene; see Tate D25094 (Turner Bequest CCLXI 122).
Technical notes:
A rectangle of darker blue paper at the centre of the sheet indicates damage from prolonged exposure to light.
