Joseph Mallord William Turner The Tywi (Towy) Estuary with Llanstephan Castle 1798

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 36 Recto:
The Tywi (Towy) Estuary with Llanstephan Castle 1798
D01278
Turner Bequest XXXVIII 27
Pencil on white wove paper, 229 x 332 mm
Blind-stamped with Turner Bequest monogram bottom centre
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘27’ bottom left, descending vertically
Stamped in black ‘XXXVIII 27’ bottom left, descending vertically
This drawing was made slightly closer to the coast than that on folio 35 recto (D01277; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 26). A further view of this subject is the rapid study, perhaps made with a composition in mind, in the Dynevor Castle sketchbook (Tate D01574–D01575; Turner Bequest XL 65a, 66).
Verso:
Blank; there are watercolour washes along the inner and bottom edges of the sheet, presumably from the drawing on the next page, which if correctly identified and bound in place now is folio 37 recto (D01342; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 88); a streak of blue colour; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram. Finberg noted a leaf ‘with watercolour on it torn out here’ and suggested that it may have been D01331 (Turner Bequest XXXVIII 77),1 which has since been bound in as folio 32 recto.
