Joseph Mallord William Turner The Estuary of the Mawddach 1798

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 48 Recto:
The Estuary of the Mawddach 1798
D01286
Turner Bequest XXXVIII 34
Pencil on white wove paper, 229 x 332 mm
Blind-stamped with Turner Bequest monogram bottom right
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘34’ bottom left, descending vertically
Stamped in black ‘XXXVIII 34’ bottom left, descending vertically
The inscription on the verso identifies this as a view on the Mawddach at Maes-y-garnedd near Llanelltyd, a mile north-west of Dolgellau, looking west down the estuary towards Barmouth. The distant hills are then presumably Clogau and, farther away, the southern arm of Dyffryn Ardudwy. Turner has recorded some boat-building activity in the foreground.
Verso:
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Massygarnedd’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram. Compare folio 52 recto (D01349; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 95) in this book, which also bears the name ‘Massygarnedd’, but clearly shows a different and more mountainous region.
