Joseph Mallord William Turner The Estuary of the Mawddach near Barmouth 1798

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 53 Recto:
The Estuary of the Mawddach near Barmouth 1798
D01289
Turner Bequest XXXVIII 37
Pencil on white wove paper, 229 x 332 mm
Blind-stamped with Turner Bequest monogram bottom centre
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘37’ bottom left, descending vertically
Stamped in black ‘XXXVIII 37’ bottom left, descending vertically
The identification of the subject is due to the late British Museum curator Edward Croft-Murray. It has not proved possible to confirm this suggestion, but it seems plausible. Although Edward Lascelles, of Harewood in Yorkshire (see the ‘North of England 1797–1801’ section of this catalogue), apparently commissioned a watercolour of the subject (see the inscription on the verso), no finished work survives.
Technical notes:
There are paint smears from folio 52 recto (D01349; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 95) along lower the edge of the drawing.
Verso:
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Honble Mr Lacelles’; stamped in brown ink with Turner Bequest monogram.
