With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page an easterly view of the eleventh-century castle at Gisors, located some twenty-five miles east of the Seine as it flows past Les Andelys. Above the foreground’s picturesque tangle of vernacular buildings, the central donjon of the fortifications rises on its high mound with the Tour du Prisonnier just to the left.
Gisors and its ancient stronghold were the subject of particular study in this sketchbook.
