With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner drew a cursory sketch of the Convent of Sainte-Barbe on the Seine near Rouen at the centre of this page. The river frontage is shown towards the right with the plateau of Canteleu rising behind. The mainly seventeenth-century edifice appears in a watercolour that Turner worked up around this time perhaps with a view to engraved reproduction; see Tate D24643 (Turner Bequest CCLIX 78).
