Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 66 Recto:
The Banks of the Seine, Normandy 1832
D24011
Turner Bequest CCLIV 66
Pencil on white wove paper, 174 x 117 mm
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘66’ top left, inverted
Stamped in black ink ‘CCLIV – 66’ top left, inverted

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated, the loose drawings of overlapping hills that fill this page were taken along the Normandy banks of the Seine. Turner’s technique here is too cursory for the identification of a definite location although neighbouring pages suggest a position in the uplands around Rouen or close to the rocky cliffs at Duclair. For a comparison, see the entry for folio 67 recto (D24013; Turner Bequest CCLIV 67).
