With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled much of this page with a view of a steep hillside punctuated by individual buildings and copses. Although the architecture is too generic here for identification of a definitive location, the position of the sketch within the volume suggests a location near Le Havre in Normandy. Turner made several sketches of that area in the neighbouring pages and may have spotted this picturesque subject on his way up to the cliff tops at Cap de la Hève or the nearby town of Montivilliers.
