With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a depiction of the northern outskirts of Montivilliers in Normandy which is situated about seven miles north-east of the port at Le Havre. The ramparts with a large round tower seen at the centre of the page are described in a more cursory fashion on folio 94 verso opposite (D24068; Turner Bequest CCLIV 94a). Several figures are dotted around the scene including an individual seated on a tussock at the right-hand edge of the page, another perched on the ramparts, and a further group, possibly mounted, making its way along the road. A list of pages in this volume featuring views of Montivilliers is provided in the entry for folio 96 recto (D24071; Turner Bequest CCLIV 96).
