Made with the page turned horizontally, this rapid and incomplete study is perhaps derived from the elaborate pencil drawing of Caernarvon in the 1798 Hereford Court sketchbook (Tate D01348; Turner Bequest XXXVIII 94); there are also slight pencil studies of the walls of the castle from much the same viewpoint in the 1799 Lancashire and North Wales sketchbook (Tate D01947, D01949, D01951; Turner Bequest XLV 24a, 25a, 26a).

There is some white gouache offset from folio 43 verso (D01862; Turner Bequest XLIII 42a).
