Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, the subject is continued on folio 77 recto opposite (D02330). Turner’s viewpoint is near the junction of New Street, looking north towards the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, with its tower of 1400–5. The great perpendicular west window is noted in a separate sketch on the other page. The tower of St Thomas’s can be seen in the distance in the view of Salisbury from Harnham Hill on folios 6 verso–7 recto (D02249–D02250; Turner Bequest XLIX 6a–7).
