Here Turner has made swift and cursory sketches of clouds and coastline, a windmill on a cliff, a cart resembling those in Rubens’s pastorals, and locals wearing a ‘Blue smock frock’, ‘sabots’ (a type of clog worn in France and Belgium) and clothing made from ‘Tan Cloth’.
