The central sketch is a roughly rendered view of Sedan (see Tate D19682; Turner Bequest CCXVI 66a) and the lowermost sketches are catalogued by Cecilia Powell as prospects of Charleville. The twin-towered church with narrow tapering spires is presumably the ancient chapel built by Charles Gonzaga, the founder of Charleville (see Tate D19558; Turner Bequest CCXVI 4). This chapel was remodelled into the Church of Saint-Rémi in the mid to late nineteenth century.
