These finely rendered studies, drawn with the sketchbook turned horizontally, show three parts of a wide-angled view of Trier from the west. St Gangolf’s Church can be seen in the uppermost sketch, adjacent to the cathedral and the Porta Nigra at left. The river view close to the gutter of the sketchbook shows the Roman Bridge, Altekrahnen, and Martinskloster. For other sketches of Trier in this book, see Tate D19725–D19728, D19730–D19743; Turner Bequest CCXVI 88a–90, 91–97a; see also the watercolour and gouache drawing of Trier from the west of 1839: Tate D24715; Turner Bequest CCLIX 150.
