These finely rendered drawings depict various buildings at Trier, recorded by Turner from a vantage point on the hillsides of Pallien. The uppermost sketch includes the cathedral and Church of Our Lady, while the sketch below shows the city’s two tread-wheel cranes: the Altekrahnen and the Trierer Moselkrahn. The drawing at rear depicts the Napoleonsbrücke of Pallien, a sandstone bridge constructed in 1804 to connect Trier to Aachen (see also Tate D19727, D19735, D20146; Turner Bequest CCXVI 89a, 93a, CCXVIII 8). In the distance, beyond Pallien, the arched Roman bridge can be seen traversing the Moselle. Similar sketches are found on the folio opposite Tate D19733; Turner Bequest CCXVI 92a. See also Tate D19725–D19732, D19736–D19743; Turner Bequest CCXVI 88a–92, 94–97a.
