J.M.W. Turner: Sketchbooks, Drawings and Watercolours

This page is filled with a series of diminutive yet carefully rendered sketches recording aspects of Trier and Pallien. Parallel to the gutter of the book Turner has drawn a view of the Moselle with Pallien at right; the artist has also inscribed a note below the curving bank of the river which appears to read ‘Loading [Cart or Corn]’. The following sketch, extending across the entire page, shows Trier at left, and includes the city’s principal ecclesiastical buildings (the cathedral, the Liebfrauenkirche, and St Gangolf’s Church), a tread-wheel crane and finally the Roman Bridge. Along the outer edge of the page are two further sketches: one squared-off view showing Pallien and Trier and a detail of two female figures carrying jugs, dressed in long tunics and hats. Turner annotates this jotting ‘Blue’ and ‘Red’, most probably referring to the colours of the figures’ clothing.
