In this series of views Turner shows the Roman Bridge at Trier, fortified at its base by a tower and gateway built into the circuit of the city walls. Boats are moored at the sandy riverbank, near to one of the Trier’s ancient tread-wheel cranes. In the top sketch Turner has annotated part of the Moselle with ‘warm’ and ‘cold’ at either side of a grassy islet; perhaps a note to remind him of the quality of light. At the long outer edge of the sheet are details of two of Trier’s celebrated ecclesiastical buildings: the cathedral at left and the tower of St Gangolf at right.
