At the uppermost register Turner has produced a sketch of a canopied boat (much like those pictured on D19801, D19803; Turner Bequest CCXVI 125v, 126), and beneath it, a view of the flying bridge at Leutesdorf on the Rhine. The onion-domed building visible in the distance is the Archbishop’s Castle at Andernach. The Castle is pictured in the sketch of Andernach below and in George Clarkson Stanfield’s oil painting Andernach on the Rhine, Germany of 1865 (Derby Museum and Art Gallery).1
With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner pictures Leutesdorf, the Archbishop’s Castle at Andernach, and the town of Hammerstein (inscribed ‘Hamirstin’) in the distance (see also Tate D12655–D12656, D12797, D12799; Turner Bequest CLIX 79a–80, CLX 50, 51). Hammerstein is shown in other drawings such as Tate D12660, D12793–D12795, D12856, D12881, D12888–D12891, D19838–D19839, D30520–D30523, D30526; Turner Bequest CLIX 82, 48–49, 79a, 92v, D12888–D12891, CCXVI 144–144a, CCCIII 32–33a, CCCIII 35.
