The uppermost sketch is a swiftly executed street scene in a town or city; the location is difficult to decipher given the summary nature of Turner’s handling. The visible architecture includes a tall rectangular tower at right and a narrow conical tower behind it. The artist has dashed off a very slight record of a building below the street scene, taken with the sketchbook turned upside down.
