Here Turner makes a relatively detailed study of a canal barge, probably moored at Ghent. The artist records part of the vessel’s mast at bottom right. A carved wooden figurehead in the shape of a lion decorates at the bow of the barge. Similar studies are found on Tate D19871–D19872; Turner Bequest CCXCI 158a–159.
