Produced with the sketchbook turned upside down, these jottings show a collection of three unidentified objects and a view of a lane with a windmill and a distant town beyond. The landscape is most probably Abbeville in northern France (see also Tate D19938, D20116–D20117; Turner Bequest CCXVI 194, CCXVII 22–23). Turner has written the note ‘Hayrick and 2 Sails in the Light’ at the rear of the view.
