These sketches of river scenes were taken with the book turned upside down. Turner records a village with a water-mill at the uppermost register, a view which continues onto the folio opposite (Tate D19942; Turner Bequest CCXVI 196). At centre there appears to be a small mooring station for riverboats, and at rear is the walls of a city. The location is likely to be northern France, perhaps the outskirts of Dunkirk which is depicted on Turner Bequest CCXVI 196.
