This previously unidentified sketch, catalogued by Finberg as ‘City Walls’, appears to depict the exterior walls which surround the chateau at Eu, with a group of figures relaxing on a grassy slope nearby. The chateau was erected in 1578 as the residence of Henri de Guise and Catherine de Clèves and later developed by Anne-Marie-Louise d’Orléans (1627–1693), cousin to Louis XVI, who was known colloquially as ‘La Grande Mademoiselle’.1 Part of the wall is shown again on Tate D19961; Turner Bequest CCXVI 206.
