These two sketches may in fact be intended to be viewed as one wide-angled prospect. The location is Dieppe, and its most famous landmarks are rendered clearly in profile in the lowermost ‘section’ of the panorama. Visible at centre is the Château de Dieppe (see Tate D20038; Turner Bequest CCXVI 248), the dome and tower of Saint-Jacques Church, and the same cylindrical tower with flag as is depicted on Tate D20035; Turner Bequest CCXVI 246a. The uppermost sketch depicts cliffs on the coast and a stretch of headland beyond.
