This swiftly dashed off view shows the quayside at Liège, Belgium, on the banks of the river Meuse. At left Turner has sketched a few figures going about their daily business, chatting, transacting, walking to and fro. The Pont des Arches, the city’s ancient stone bridge, is directly behind them and on the high ridge at left stands Liège Citadel. A separate sketch of the Pont des Arches has been drawn above the main view across the uppermost register.
