This is a view of the Belgian city of Brussels, taken from a northerly perspective. Turner may have drawn this view from the vast parkland which surrounds the Royal Palace of Laeken, situated to the north of the city. The profiles of the Cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula and of the Town Hall can be seen at left and right respectively. Turner stayed at Brussels on 12 August 1824, at the very beginning of his tour, and on 5 September, towards the end of it.
