This colour study is based on a slight sketch in the 1798 Dynevor Castle sketchbook (Tate D01539–D01540; Turner Bequest XL 45a–46), which seems to show Crickhowell from the Abergavenny road, with the castle ruins on a low hill in the middle distance. The configuration of the landscape has been altered here, so that the similarities with that view of Crickhowell are less obvious.
There are unrelated drawings of a palm tree on the verso (D40059).
