With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the top half of this page with studies of the settlement of Charenton-le-Pont, located some four miles south-east of central Paris. Particular attention has been paid to the old bridge surmounted by buildings which crossed the Seine at this point. Drawings of this neighbourhood recur on several pages in this volume, a list of which is included in the sketchbook Introduction.
