With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a view of trees and densely clustered buildings. Art historians Anne Lyles and Diane Perkins have suggested that this scene depicts the cathedral town of Troyes, situated about one hundred miles south-east of Paris.1 Certainly drawings of this site appear frequently in this part of the volume. A list of these is provided in the sketchbook Introduction for comparison.
