With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled much of this page with studies of a substantial house typical of the architecture of northern France. Attention has been paid to the arrangement of windows on the façade and tall fence posts around the forecourt. Turner travelled extensively around the satellite settlements of Paris in the Île-de-France with this sketchbook and also up the River Marne to the east of the city, so this scene was probably captured in one of those regions.
