With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a description of the gardens at the Château de Saint-Cloud, located some seven miles west of central Paris on the banks of the Seine. On the left-hand side of the page is included part of the Grande Cascade that tumbles down towards the river from the formal parterres. This spectacular garden ornament featured in Turner’s subsequent depiction of Saint-Cloud for a new edition of Walter Scott’s Life of Napoleon Buonaparte (1834–36); see Tate impression T04974. A list of pages in the present volume featuring Saint-Cloud is provided in the sketchbook Introduction.
