With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled much of this page with studies of a river valley punctuated by buildings. The handling is too cursory here to suggest a location, although this volume contains numerous such landscapes taken in the countryside surrounding Paris and around the River Marne to the east of the city. For comparison, a list of these drawings is provided in the sketchbook Introduction.
