With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled the top strip of this page a view of the palace gardens of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, situated some twelve miles west of central Paris. This location is given away by the sloping terraces at the centre of the scene. This site features on multiple pages of this volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook Introduction. An engraving of the palace subsequently featured in the 1835 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate T04714.
