With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner worked this page with drawings of the palace of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, situated some twelve miles west of central Paris. Particular attention has been paid to capturing the effect of the edifice’s densely ornamented façade in the top half of the page. This site features on multiple pages of this volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook Introduction. An engraving of the palace subsequently featured in the 1835 volume of Turner’s Annual Tour: Wanderings by the Loire and Seine (1833–5; later reissued as Rivers of France); see Tate T04714.
