Made with the page turned horizontally, this is a view looking across the River Seiont to the southern walls of Caernarvon Castle, with, from left to right, the Eagle Tower, the Queen’s Tower and the Chamberlain’s Tower. Turner had already submitted a heroic view of Caernarvon from the estuary, with a westering sun, to the Royal Academy’s exhibition in this year, 1799 (private collection),1 and had made a small oil sketch of a similar composition (Tate N01867);2 a panorama including Caernarvon Castle seen at a distance was to appear at the Academy in 1800 (Tate D04164; Turner Bequest LXX M).3
